A project is a temporary effort to develop a product, service, or outcome that has a beginning and an end (often determined by funding or deliverables), with the aim of achieving unique goals in order to generate benefits or added value. Project management is the activity of planning, organizing, motivating, and controlling resources to achieve these specific goals. The main challenge of project management is to achieve all the goals of the project, while respecting its constraints: scope, time, quality, and budget. The secondary and more ambitious challenge is to optimize the allocation of resources to achieve the predefined objectives. The temporary nature of projects is to be contrasted with operational activities, which are the more repetitive and (semi) permanent functional activities that also contribute to the development of products and services within the organization.
